JETS COACHING STAFF JUST GOT THAT MUCH BETTER

As many Jets fans know, Adam Gase was recently hired to be the new head coach. It didn’t take long for Gase to revamp the Jets ineffective coaching staff. His first move was to hire a new defensive coordinator. It was announced on Wednesday night that Gregg Williams would be the next man in charge on the other side of the ball. This decision has made Jets fans even more excited about next season.
For a majority of his career, Gregg Williams has been a notorious defensive coordinator. He is well known for dialing up aggressive blitzes, which is something that the Jets defense has lacked the past couple of years. He has worked with a number of teams throughout the NFL but is best remembered for his roles with the New Orleans Saints and the Cleveland Browns.
During his career with the Saints, he transformed a mediocre defense into the 2nd best in the league creating 35 turnovers thus leading them to victory in Super Bowl XLV. However, the decision could be controversial due to the infamous “Bountygate Scandal”. Members of the New Orleans Saints were involved in paying out bonuses for injuring opposing team members. They purposely enforced a more aggressive style of play to hurt key players.  For example, in the 2009 NFC Championship game vs. the Minnesota Vikings, both Williams and Sean Payton told their players to purposely knock Brett Favre out of the game so they could win and advance. Both Williams and Payton were suspended for a year. However, other than Bountygate, he has made many mediocre defenses that much better. In addition, he served as defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns in 2017 and half of 2018 and he was promoted to interim head coach after Hue Jackson was fired. Williams then led the team to a 5-3 record allowing Baker Mayfield to emerge as a decent player.

Enough about the other teams, now onto the J-E-T-S. Even with the black cloud of Bountygate, HC Adam Gase feels that Williams has served his time for the crime. So, if the head coach is willing to give him the benefit of the doubt then the fans should as well. Williams could be a great fit because he has the ability to teach the defense how to finish games in which they have the lead. Also, Gase will be able to focus more on developing Darnold and the offense now that Williams has been brought on to transform their struggling defense. Overall, excitement is in the air with the Jets reorganizing into what could lead to many victories. Get excited Jets fans…2019 looks like it could possibly end the 8 year-long playoff drought. J-E-T-S, JETS, JETS, JETS!!!
