WELL THIS ONE WAS EXPECTED TO BE UGLY

On Sunday, the New York Jets took on the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. The Jets got blown out 35-9. Up until this point, the Jets have failed to score a touchdown for the past seven quarters. They are on pace for a historically bad 0-16 season. The last time they started the season 0-8 was that dreadful year of 1996 coached by Rich Kotite when they ended up going 1-15. With the way the 2020 Jets are playing right now, it seems very possible that they might be able to eclipse that by going 0-16.

In terms of the offense, QB Sam Darnold completed 18 of 33 passes for only 133 yards, no touchdowns, and no interceptions. The first three drives for the Jets resulted in points but only field goals as the offense failed to reach the red zone. The offense shut down right before halftime as a field goal was blocked, which would have made the score a respectable 21-12 deficit and still a game. However, every Jets possession of the second half resulted in a 3 and out and a fumble by TE Chris Herndon. Don’t even get me started with him. Every time he touched the ball, he either dropped a critical pass or fumbled the ball away this season. In addition, the Jets did not target their rookie players enough in Denzel Mims and La’Mical Perine. At 0-8, it is probably time to start planning for the future and not trying to salvage anything this season.

In terms of the defense, they were burned from the very first Kansas City drive as they allowed Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes to complete 31 of 42 passes for 416 yards and 5 touchdowns. The Jets seemed completely unaware of the fake punt that the Chiefs converted on during their second drive of the game. Many Jets fans did not expect a win today but hoped they could have kept the game close. Another trade the Jets made was trading LB Avery Williamson to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a fifth and seventh round 2022 draft pick. He has went from the only winless team in the NFL to the only undefeated team.

Next week, the Jets will travel back home to take on the New England Patriots on Monday Night Football. Yes they are without Tom Brady but with the way the Jets have been playing this season, it doesn’t seem like this will be an easy win. Can they win??? Sure...but will they is the big question? One thing I do know is that if they plan on winning, the defense is going to need to create turnovers, the offense will need to be well-balanced and be able to score touchdowns, and penalties cannot be an issue. In all likelihood, it probably will not be a 33-0 blowout like last year, but you just never know. Don’t worry Jets fans...maybe next week.
