Jets Vs Colts Preview (TNF Special)

As the Jets come off of a big Halloween win last Sunday against the Bengals, Backup (now starter) QB Mike White is called once again to command the Jets offense as they head onto the road to Indianapolis at Lucas Oil Stadium to play QB Carson Wentz and the Indianapolis Colts. Both teams sit with 5 losses with the Jets at 2-5 and the Colts at 3-5, and both teams will fight with any hopes of keeping their postseason chances alive. The Jets must continue their positive trends from last week and avoid a "hangover" like game in this one.

For today's injury report, two key starters are still out in Corey Davis and Zach Wilson. Davis is listed as doubtful again with a hip injury and Wilson is out with his knee injury from two weeks back against the Patriots. RB Tevin Coleman is also out in this game with a hamstring injury, and newly acquired OT Laurent Duvernay-Tardif will be a healthy scratch this week, but should be ready to play for the Bills game in week 10. OT George Fant is also questionable with an ankle injury as well.  As for the Colts, WR TY Hilton is out along with OG Quentin Nelson being listed as questionable.

For a Colts preview, they haven't played as well as expected so far this year, but still can be a threat to any defense. Offensively, they now are under the direction of QB Carson Wentz and feature star RB Jonathan Taylor as well. Some key offensive pieces to watch for tonight would be WR Michael Pittman Jr. and TE Jack Doyle. The Jets have had trouble covering quality TE's this year, and Doyle and fellow TE Mo Allie-Cox both are big receiving options in the Colts offense. I would highly anticipate either Doyle or Allie-Cox to have a big game against the Jets tonight whether the Jets win or lose.

Both Jets RB Michael Carter and RB Jonathan Taylor
are big reasons for the offensive success of these teams
Defensively, the Colts are overall a middle of the league ranking as a whole, but up front, have caused lots of trouble for opposing offenses. They have easily one of the best pass rush and rushing defenses in the NFL, with guys like DT DeForest Buckner, rookie DE Kwity Paye, and DT Grover Stewart. They also feature an all-star LB in Darius Leonard who can drop back in coverage and rush well and is a hybrid style LB. In the secondary, CB's Xavier Rhodes and Rock Ya-Sin both are established players in the league and play a big role in their defense as well. Rhodes had a pick-six against the Jets last season against Sam Darnold when the Jets last visited Lucas Oil Stadium. This time around, we would hope to avoid heading down that same route with Mike White.

For the Jets, offensively speaking, keeping the game simple just as it was done last week will be a key to victory. QB Mike White didn't throw a pass over 25 yards in last week's game, but still managed to throw for 405 yards despite the fact. Spreading out the targets is also key, along with a solid ground game, which the Jets once again were very successful with last weekend. RB Michael Carter must continue to be used the way he has been as he finally is starting to see his snaps and carries increase. WR Jamison Crowder was a big piece as well last weekend and between him and Michael Carter, they had a combined 17 receptions. Those two will need to be ready at full force with the likely absence again from Corey Davis.

Defensively, the Jets need to jump out of the gate as early as possible in this game. A turnover early, or a defensive stop can set the momentum that the Jets will need going forward in this contest. With the Colts having a top offensive line in the league as well, the Jets will be having to work that much harder to create pressure on Carson Wentz during the game. The Colts play a possession style game, where they average a total of 31:28 time of possession during games, according to nfl.com. The Jets have to try to take away possession in order to stay in this game and come out of Indiana victorious.

For my pick for this game, after seeing last week's performance, it definitely gives me more confidence in knowing that the Jets had some life after the abysmal Patriots performance in New England. However, I see the Jets heading in the right direction and I believe we will have ourselves a great game on our hands. However, the late game execution will play a role for the Jets and they will capitalize this time around. I have the Jets winning this one by a score of 28-21.
