Jets Vs Patriots Preview

The final game has arrived for the New York Jets, and most likely the final game for HC Todd Bowles as well, as NFL.com has reported that he is likely to be fired by the game's end. A very worn down Jets team will be heading up to Foxborough to play the AFC East champion Patriots, who have now won the division for ten straight seasons. The Jets can only play spoilers today, as the Patriots are playing for a first-round bye and potentially the number 1 seed as well.

Overall, this season has been nothing but lackluster for the Jets, having been disappointing in games week in and week out. This will now mark the third straight season the Jets have finished in dead last in the AFC East, but even despite all these negatives, development for QB Sam Darnold is key, and the Jets will have nothing to lose coming into this matchup. As you may expect, the Patriots will not be benching their starters since they still have playoff positioning to clinch, so Darnold will get to see Tom Brady for the first time ever in his career (Josh McCown started the earlier matchup against the Pats). Ultimately, this plays as the only key factor in today's game, and otherwise, we all must look ahead at the future of this franchise.

The Todd Bowles era has been nothing short of incomplete. After having a great 10-6 season in his first year as Jets HC in 2015, they still somehow missed the playoffs, which to this day, was nothing short of bad luck mixed with a poor week 17 performance in Buffalo under QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (remember that). After 2015, things have gone South for the Jets under HC Todd Bowles, when they were 5-11 in both 2016 and 2017, and look to end at that same record with a win today. Otherwise, they will end 4-12 and have the worst record ever in the Bowles era as Jets HC.

As for the Patriots, obviously Tom Brady is their QB and they feature big targets such as everyone's favorite TE Rob Gronkowski and RB Sony Michel, who both are dangerous when they play well. Last time these teams met, Michel ran for his season-high 133 yards on 21 carries and also had a TD as well. He is also coming off of a 116 yard performance against the Bills last week, so he is carrying the ball well. With a good performance today, he could present a chance to eclipse the 1000 yard mark in just his first NFL season, as he only needs 119 yards to reach the landmark. TE Rob Gronkowski's stats have taken a big drop in 2018 with injuries and age,  but that doesn't eliminate him from being a big red zone target (He loves the Jets). Expect the Patriots to go full speed at the Jets, so the defense, unlike last week, must be ready for the call if there is any chance of winning.

As for today's prediction, I see today as a development game for players such as Sam Darnold and TE Chris Herndon, and I don't necessarily think winning is key today, although a win would always be nice against your most hated division foes. I don't think the Jets have anything left in the tank, and all are ready and looking towards new jerseys, a new coach, and a new team next season. It's sad to say that the Jets once again had another disappointing season, but this doesn't mean the future won't be bright. Let's get this season finished up today and look ahead to the exciting future we have ahead of us. I'll take the Patriots winning pretty easily 28-10.

Maybe this will help Jets fans feel a little bit better about today
