THE NEW BROADWAY JOE HAS ARRIVED

On Friday June 7th, the New York Jets hired their new GM Joe Douglas. While he may not be a man about town or wear fur coats, he still may be the man behind the Jets next Super Bowl victory.

Douglas, originally Vice President of Player Personnel for the Philadelphia Eagles was snatched by the Jets to be the next man in charge. It was way past the time for Mike Maccagnan to go. Personally, I feel he should have been fired along with Bowles. It is never good to be in a relationship where the head coach and general manager do not get along. Hence the story of Rex Ryan/John Idzik and Adam Gase/Mike Maccagnan…don’t even get me started.

It appeared that when the Jets fired Maccagnan that they were reverting back to being the laughingstock of the NFL or the “Same Old Jets” for waiting until well into the offseason. I am beyond tired of hearing negative comments and am glad they finally did something about it. Fortunately, the Jets appear to have put the losing mentality behind them and look to the future with Douglas in charge.

Previously, Douglas had the task of assembling the 2017 Philadelphia Eagles roster that made it all the way to Super Bowl LII and defeated the hated Patriots 41-33. Maybe… just maybe next year, the Jets will be in the same position. As a matter of fact, the 2016 Philadelphia Eagles were in a similar situation with the 2018 New York Jets. They both had rookie quarterbacks who had their ups and downs. The difference was that in 2017, Wentz made a giant leap in his Sophomore season. The Jets can only hope that Darnold makes the same adjustments in his second year.

Most likely, the Jets will be significantly better in the 2019 season. They have already added in some key editions such as RB Le’Veon Bell to ease the QB burden on Darnold. In addition, they have added in LB CJ Mosley who will bolster the Jets defense. Finally, they drafted DE Quinnen Williams out of Alabama who Jets fan hope will be a sack machine and get the big hit on Brady. The keys to winning games in the NFL are having a consistent running game and solid defense (“ground and pound”).

Overall, in order for the Jets to contend for a playoff spot this year, Bell will need to be at his absolute best and the defense will need to finish the games in which they have the lead. These strategies, along with a coach who hopefully can maintain the clock better than Bowles will only make Darnold’s job that much easier. These have been recurring problems that have plagued the Jets over the past few years. Get excited Jets fans…the new season is less than three months away and it looks to be one to remember. J-E-T-S, JETS, JETS, JETS!!!
