Jets Vs Eagles Preview

As week 5 approaches, the New York Jets come off of a bye week with lots of questions to be answered. This week, these questions will roll into today's matchup, as they travel to Philadelphia to take on Carson Wentz and the Eagles. This is a key game for the Jets, as today reaches a quarter of the games played this year, and still yet without a victory, people question if it is too late to turn things around.

Sadly, Sam Darnold is still out again this week, as it was announced on Friday that even though he has been cleared to practice, he still cannot play in games, as it is too much of a risk. Luke Falk gets the call again as he will be making his second career NFL start today. Some other notable injuries to take a look at today is LB Jordan Jenkins, who will be out with a calf injury this week, as well as LB CJ Mosley, who is still doubtful due to the groin injury from week 1 against the Buffalo Bills. DT Quenin Williams is now upgraded to questionable, as he has been out the past few weeks with an ankle injury. OG Kelechi Osemele also is doubtful today due to a shoulder and knee injury. Without a doubt, the injury bug is hitting the Jets hard.

In order for the Jets to present themselves with any chance at a victory today, they must be more efficient offensively. Through three games, the Jets only have 36 First Downs, compared to the opponents 60 First Downs (stats from NFL.com). They also have already given up 13 sacks, meaning that the offensive line must do better in order to protect Luke Falk today. Offensively, they have failed to reach over 400 yards to this point, averaging under 200 yards of total offense per game, which is also a major weak sign. Even with the major addition of RB Le'veon Bell, if the offensive line cannot block for him, he will have trouble being the effective player we all know he can be. The Jets must continue to utilize the short pass game from Falk and look for guys like WR Jamison Crowder to step up today along with Robby Anderson and Ty Montgomery. The Jets are in serious need of help right now if they expect the winning ways to return.

For the Eagles, although inconsistent so far this year and also injury prone managed to pull off a huge week 4 victory on Thursday Night Football as they went to Lambeau Field and took down Aaron Rodgers and the strong Green Bay Packers team. As many football fans remember, a very similar looking Eagles team was a Super Bowl champion just two years ago, so they must always be presented as a threat to any team they face. With a QB like Carson Wentz, and key receivers like Alshon Jeffery and Nelson Agholor, they for sure become a threat downfield. Luckily for the Jets, WR Desean Jackson is out today with an abdomen injury, so a huge offensive threat is avoided there. TE Zach Ertz and TE Dallas Goedert also play huge roles in this offense, and are some of Carson Wentz's favorite targets to throw to.

In the backfield, former Chicago Bears RB Jordan Howard looks to be taking a majority of the carries, and is coming off of a solid performance against the Packers on Thursday Night Football last week. They also feature Penn State Rookie Miles Sanders, along with veteran back Daren Sproles, and sometimes Corey Clement as a receiver out of the backfield.  The Jets defense must step up to the plate again today, as they have been pretty strong this early half of the season. Too many minutes on the field, fatigue, and no CJ Mosley have proven quite the difference in some of the score outcomes. They will need to try to be as consistent as possible today for as long as possible in order to stop this dangerous Eagles offense.

Although the Eagles have a great defense as well, their two top CB's Ronald Darby and Avonte Maddox are both out today and CB Sidney Jones is questionable. With this, the Eagles only have three active CB's today, so the Jets must be willing to throw the ball since the Eagles are also a few numbers down defensively today. It looks likely that Rasul Douglas will be their top cornerback available today, and most likely will be covering Robby Anderson in this case. Although Douglas is good, he for sure is vulnerable, and the Jets must be willing to expose this flaw in their defense.

For today's prediction, It cannot be told without saying that this matchup and the road ahead is not looking easy at all for the Jets, so a win is very necessary today to keep the playoff hopes alive. With QB Luke Falk only making just his second NFL start, his experience is lacking, and it could lead to some "rookie mistakes" if you know what I'm saying. Although it truly pains me to say this, the Jets haven't had the firepower all that much since Sam Darnold has been out, and until they prove me wrong, I can see this only continuing to be a consistent trend. I like the Eagles today 27-14.
