Jets Vs Raiders Preview

A big chance for the Jets to win today is upon us, and even with the slim playoff chances still alive, every big game like this one matters. Coming off of two straight victories against the toilet bowl teams in the NFC East, The Jets play host to Derek Carr, Josh Jacobs and the Oakland Raiders today. Today is not only a chance for the Jets to continue their winning streak, but with the upcoming schedule, there are lots of winnable games coming up that could very well be chances for the Jets to keep winning like they have been.

QB Sam Darnold and TE Ryan Griffin have been gaining
some strong offensive chemistry the past few weeks
In these past few weeks, QB Sam Darnold has been finding a new big target in TE Ryan Griffin, and as of yesterday, the Jets have resigned him to a multi-year extension, and with Chris Herndon not being fully healthy at all this year, Griffin has stepped up in big ways and become a major endzone target for Darnold to throw to. In last week's outing with the Redskins, Darnold had a 121.3 QB rating and threw for slightly under 300 yards and had 4 TD passes. With this strong play, The Jets Offensive line has also been protecting Darnold so he can get passes off. With this time, it gives more time for Darnold to be more efficient and not have to worry about being under pressure for a whole game.

For the Raiders, saying this last season in Oakland and all the success they're having would be considered a surprise with what they've had to deal with this year. Coming off of a 4-12 season, they thought things would change when trading for WR Antonio Brown, but that made things worse. With all the controversy with him and having team issues because of it, they were forced to drop him, and people thought this season would be a nightmare, but it has been quite a bit of success. At 6-4, the Raiders have been strong and present a real threat in the AFC this season. Their three main offensive targets are QB Derek Carr, RB Josh Jacobs, and TE Darren Waller.
Derek Carr (Left) and Sam Darnold (Right)

Derek Carr is a QB that is a solid NFL starting QB. He can stretch the field well and even despite some of the bad seasons the Raiders have had, he hasn't served as the reason for it. I would find it no surprise if he uses his WR Tyrell Williams and former Clemson WR Hunter Renfrow on some deep routes today knowing that the Jets secondary can very easily be exposed, especially with a third week without CB Daryl Roberts, who is listed as doubtful and probably won't be playing today. The Raiders like to run a three TE set as well, so it gives space for RB Josh Jacobs to run.

Despite being a rookie, Jacobs has been a key to this team's offensive success this year, and for sure serves as a factor in this football game as well. They also feature TE Darren Waller, who also is a good receiving TE, and has overcome a PED issue and come back stronger than ever. The Jets defense must be ready for what is ahead of them today.

For a brief injury report, as mentioned earlier, the Jets will most likely not have Daryl Roberts, who is listed as doubtful, and CJ Mosley is out once again this week. For the Raiders, S Lamarcus Joyner is questionable, but most likely will play. The Jets have 8 players listed as questionable, but it looks likely that all 8 of those players will suit up and play today.

Some keys to the game today include today's weather and how the Raiders coming to the east coast will affect their play. First, the weather. The forecast calls for a cold, windy, and rainy game, which could affect the kicking game as well as throwing the ball downfield. Both teams will be affected by this weather and it could spell out a low scoring game today due to the conditions. The Second key to today's game will be how do the Raiders play when they're on the East Coast. Traditionally, the Raiders have had some games to forget and tough losses on the East Coast due to the time change, and messed up sleep schedules. This believe it or not can play a major factor in performance and how the Raiders come out today.

For today's prediction, although the Raiders have won three straight games, they barely managed to sneak past the Bengals last week (who haven't won a game yet this year) at home and the Jets have been strong the past two weeks as well. The weather will make this a low scoring game, and even though Derek Carr and Sam Darnold may not have great days statistically, I think the Metlife advantage can be the difference maker for the Jets. I'll take the Jets here by a final score of 17-14.
