Jets Vs Chargers Preview

As the Jets come off of a very depressing bye week, they travel to the all new Sofi Stadium to take on Justin Herbert and the struggling 2-7 Los Angeles Chargers. Although their record is poor like the Jets, they've been in many close games, and have blown a 16 plus point lead in five different games this season. Will the Jets be able to prevail and get their first win of the year today on the road against the Chargers?

The big news again for today is that QB Sam Darnold will be out again this week with the shoulder injury which leaves Joe Flacco with another start this week. Flacco played a solid game on Monday Night Football 2 weeks ago even though the Jets imploded and lost unfortunately. He went 18/25 for 262 yards and 3 TD passes and 1 Int. The Jets offense did have moments of brilliance and proved they can move the ball on offense when players are healthy. WR's Breshad Perrimann, Jamison Crowder, and Denzel Mims all were big pieces in that game, and with OC Dowell Loggains calling the offense fully now, there is clearly a boost in morale and better play as well. Hopefully, the strong play of these 3 WR's can lead into this matchup against an average Chargers defense.

For a quick preview of the Chargers, it can't go without mentioning that they still can be effective. Rookie QB Justin Herbert has had a solid season starting with the Chargers, but has had some really unfortunate luck with his team not being able to hang onto any lead. In the backfield, they'll be using both former Jet RB Kallen Ballage and rookie RB Joshua Kelley as well. They have solid WR's with Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, and Jeremy Guyton also. They also have the former Arkansas TE Hunter Henry, who is a big end zone target for them too. This team is efficient on offense, but is subpar defensively despite having some big names.

throughout this season despite his team's losing record
Defensively, the Chargers have had their struggles this year, especially with the loss of S Derwin James. They still have some big names, including DE Joey Bosa, DE/LB Melvin Ingram III and CB Casey Heyward Jr. Bosa is the person in particular the Jets must keep their eye on. With a struggling offensive line, Bosa will look to fill up the left side. The best bet to stop this man is simple: Let Jets OT Mekhi Becton play on whatever side he is on. A big man needs to be contained by another big man, and Becton is just the guy to hold Bosa in check.

If the Jets want to win today's matchup, they must be efficient on offense and defense for all four quarters. The last game on Monday Night Football was not the case. The Jets imploded late in that game and gave Pats QB Cam Newton his shot to win the game and he did. This efficiency issue must be solved, especially against a very undisciplined team as well. It's a major chance for the Jets to take advantage. The Jets must utilize RB La'mical Perine more and more as he becomes more comfortable with the Jets offense. Defensively, I see the Jets letting Herbert play his game and therefore, getting beat badly today. If the Jets can put up any pressure on Herbert today, they might be able to force him into a few "rookie" mistakes.

Although this game has little to no relevance now for either team, the Jets must continue to develop some of their younger players while being competitive and trying to win as much as you can with the season winding down. With the struggling and undiscipline Chargers the Jets face today, this could be yet another opportunity for the Jets to get over the hill of picking up their first win of the season. I'll take the Jets in a late winner here, winning 34-31 to pick up the first win of the 2020 season.
