JETS END ABSOLUTELY MISERABLE SEASON IN TYPICAL GASE FASHION (End of Year Article)

In Week 17, the New York Jets took on the New England Patriots in their regular season finale. It was also Adam Gase’s final game as Jets head coach as they closed out the season with a 28-14 loss and an abysmal 2-14 record. Heading into this game, there were multiple questions about what the Jets would do for the future.

The offense was atrocious. As a matter of fact, they did not score 30+ points this season once. The clock management before halftime was even worse when the score was 7-7 and the Jets did not even try to get more points before the half. Another major question that came up was whether or not QB Sam Darnold would be a part of the Jets future. His performance in this game was not inspiring at all. He completed 23 of 34 passes for 266 yards, 1 touchdown pass, and 2 killer interceptions.

One can make all the excuses they want about him not having a solid O-Line, no real weapons to throw to, poor coaching by Todd Bowles and Adam Gase, or him being injured a lot and getting mono last year. However, he is a third- year quarterback in the NFL and has shown the Jets nothing inspiring that makes them believe he is the franchise quarterback whom they selected 3rd overall back in April 2018. It would probably be much better for him to get a new start with a new team. In all likelihood, Justin Fields will be the Jets quarterback in 2021.

The worst possible thing that could happen is that he has the best season of his career not as a member of the Jets. In my lifetime as a Jets fan, I have seen this situation happen often too many times. On a positive note, the Jets running game had a solid afternoon with the combination of Ty Johnson and Josh Adams. Their rushing abilities are a lot like Chris Ivory and he brought the Jets some success during his tenure there.

Despite some offensive woes, their defense came ready to play. They did whatever they could to keep the Jets in this ball game but lack of production and turnovers by the offense did them in. On a positive note, interim DC Frank Bush should be given a lot of credit for how he ran the defense since the firing of Gregg Williams. They had been a much better unit by not giving up as many points or committing costly penalties. Going into the offseason though, the priority is to sign S Marcus Maye to a big contract. The Jets cannot make the same mistake they made with Jamal Adams by him wanting out and signing with the Seattle Seahawks.

In order for the Jets to be contenders again in the near future, they must draft QB Justin Fields, draft O-Lineman, and resign Marcus Maye. With the addition of Robert Saleh as a new HC, a bright new future seems likely and hopefully, the winning culture is back for Gang Green.  Jets fans...the saying “until next year” is in fact true for right now as it has been since 1969. Until next year and may it be better than this year.
