ZACH WILSON THE ODD MAN OUT FOR THE JETS HOME OPENER

On Sunday, the New York Jets took on the New England Patriots at MetLife Stadium in their much-anticipated home opener. The storyline for this game was going to be the battle between the two rookie quarterbacks with Zach Wilson (No. 2 overall) and Mac Jones (No. 15 overall). The bottom line was that it really wasn’t a battle as the Jets lost 25-6 and fell to 0-2 on the season.

It was a day to quickly forget for Wilson. He completed 19 of 33 passes for 210 yards, no touchdowns, and 4 interceptions. This could be because he is only a rookie but a 4-interception game against your division rival at home who is also starting a rookie quarterback is unacceptable. On the other hand, while Mac Jones didn’t exactly light it up, he was smart with the football and did not turn it over once. On a positive note, the Jets O-line played much better today allowing Wilson time in the pocket, but it did not do him any good. In addition, the running game was solid as well as Ty Johnson and Tevan Coleman rushed for about 150 yards. As Jets fans, we have to hope that this is the one bad game he has this season as a rookie. During Mark Sanchez’s rookie year, he had a 5-interception game against the lowly Buffalo Bills in an ugly overtime loss. During Sam Darnold’s rookie year, he had a 4-interception game against the underachieving Miami Dolphins in another tough loss. Hopefully, Wilson can use this game as one to grow from.

In terms of the defense, they played with a lot of passion as they were able to sack Jones 3 times. Marcus Maye along with Quinnen and Quincy Williams continue to make the big plays for the Green and White on defense. The effort they showed kept the Jets in this ball game. Otherwise, it could’ve easily been 100-0 Patriots. It is just a shame though that the Jets offense was unable to generate any momentum as they failed to score a single touchdown.

Next week, it will be another tough test for the Jets as they will travel to Mile High Stadium to take on the 2-0 Denver Broncos. As if playing in Denver isn’t challenging because of the altitude alone, Teddy Bridgewater has got the Broncos offense rolling and they have an intimidating defense as well led by Von Miller. However, I said that last year the Jets were going to have their worst loss of the season against the Rams but they ended up getting their first win of the season in improbable fashion. It just made me remember that anybody can beat anybody in the NFL on any given Sunday. Jets fans...do you sense an upset next week in order to avoid going 0-3?
